Why is SEO important?
Why is SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, actually so important? Ok, let’s see, you build a website with very good content and many attractive features but what’s the point of having it if no one visits your website? How will people come to know that you have such an interesting website? This is where search engines become very important. Whenever people want to check out something, the first place anyone goes is to the internet. If you want to buy a new mobile phone or a washing machine or you are planning a holiday and are thinking of where to go, you search the internet; for anything and everything people check out the internet and tend to click on the results which come at the top of the search engine page. So when you build a website with the aim of selling something or giving out information about something, your aim is also to be at least in the first page of the search results.
Why do you need SEO?
SEO is needed because it is one of the easiest ways to get your website to be noted by search engines. SEO uses many techniques such as keywords, links, titles, headers etc. to make your website relevant enough for the search engine to take notice when a related term is searched by a potential user. Keywords become important here because when a user is searching for something, say for example holiday destinations, your website should have relevant terms or keywords connected to holiday destinations so that when the search engine programs, like crawlers and spiders, inspect your website, it sees those keywords or terms and puts your website in its list of searched results.
Why does high ranking in search results matter? It matters because when you are searching for something, the first results page comes with 10 search results. Even if it shows that there are results in next two-three pages, you hardly ever go to those pages to see those results. Most of the time, you get what you want from the first few search results itself. It is only natural for people to click on the first search result to begin their research. If it is a quick check about something, the checking ends after the first click. If you are able to achieve rank 1, it means your website will be the first in the search engine results page and the website clicked by most people. So it is of great importance to have your website at the top of the search results.
People don’t scroll
People don’t scroll – nothing can be closer to the truth. You are checking out a restaurant nearby, you type restaurants nearby in the search tab and the search engine brings back ten results in the first page and many more in the following pages, if you are looking for a quick bite, your search ends after one or two clicks of websites but if you are making elaborate lunch or dinner plans, may be you will check out few more, but it is hardly ever someone has scrolled down to the last results and moved to the next page and so on unless it is a major research about something. So again, your aim is to get your website at least to the first page using the SEO techniques.
Onsite SEO is adjusting and aligning content of your website to make it attractive for the search engine. Provide relevant and easily understandable contents, use relevant titles and headers in your website to catch the attention of the search engine so that it picks up your website and put it in its search engine results page. This is onsite SEO – that is when you are doing SEO techniques to the contents within your website.
After taking care of onsite SEO, now it is the turn to make external websites notice your website. Make your website attractive enough so that other external websites take a note of your website and provide links from their sites to your website. That is a great way of getting visibility for your website. Getting prestigious sites to give links to your website is also another way to get the attention of search engines. If there are a good number of external websites providing links to your website, it automatically gets the attention of search engines to bring you up in their ranking of search results. Different blog sites, social media sites, reviews are all good sources for such offsite SEO. Offsite SEO is also a great way to get your website to the top of search engine results.
